A
unique feature of the new Red Cross facility is that the building
serves as a "model
for mitigation" (disaster proof) in
the Midwest. The project enables our Red Cross to lead by
example in assuring an immediate Red Cross response in a catastrophic
disaster through a fully mitigated, education focused "model" building
for prevention of loss of life and property. Our building
project provides many educational opportunities for engineering,
design and construction groups from all over the Midwest.
Of particular importance are the learning opportunities for the
individuals involved in the above disciplines and for the general
public to understand and implement mitigation techniques and requirements
for home and business. The Mid America Earthquake Center of
Urbana, Illinois, oversaw the design and construction of the performance
based (disaster proof) facility. The University of Evansville
Engineering Department students chose the Red Cross building project
as their senior project and completed the structural engineering
design for this model facility for mitigation for the Midwest.
The priority in realizing our plan for expanding health and emergency
preparedness and response services for our community was to secure
funds for a 24,000 square foot functional facility. This facility
will now house the Accident,
Illness and Disease Prevention Center,
Disaster Preparedness and Response, Service to Military, Blood and
Tissue Services.
