Health & Safety
The Southwestern Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross provides life-saving training every day and offers courses covering a wide array of basic
and specialized skills. In the past year, thanks in part to the countless hours of dedicated volunteer instructors, more than 12,000 individuals learned
lifesaving CPR and First Aid skills from your Red Cross. Additionally, nearly 2,000 people were trained to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
during a cardiac arrest.
Unique training opportunities
With the support of the Welborn Baptist Foundation, our chapter has launched innovative CPR &
First Aid certification classes designed for traditionally underserved populations in our community.
Thanks to these efforts, 26 hearing-impaired students learned life-saving skills in American Sign
Language and17 individuals were trained by a Spanish-speaking instructor.
Reaching out to our community
Our chapter continues to actively engage area children with basic health and safety programs.
Thanks to the help of “Scrubby Bear” and Red Cross volunteers, 220 young people were taught
to prevent the spread of germs with proper handwashing. To educate children how to prepare and
respond to emergencies, we enlisted the services of “Cool Cat” who showed 212 children how to
‘stay cool’ in dangerous situations.
Other outreach programs were equally successful. In addition to providing crucial first-aid support
at local events such as the Evansville Freedom Festival, our chapter participated in 58 health fairs
in the past year, at which nearly 15,000 people learned about Red Cross services and programs.
"COOL CAT" TEACHES SAFETY: Cool Cat took his message of safety to the boys and girls at Culver Elementary to ensure they were all Red Cross Ready for Thanksgiving.
